Vacation 2010

Because we don’t like to “plan” our trips enough to make reservations anywhere we conclude that we should leave on Sundays so we can get a first come, first server site since most weekenders would be leaving by then.

Also lately we have become road trip wimps where we don’t want to venture too far from home so that make leaving on Sunday all right.

This year we decided to go to Petoskey Michigan, about a 9 hour drive. When I asked mom her favorite camping sites in Michigan where they use to camp a lot, she mentioned a lot of state parks but kept emphasizing Yankee Springs but it is only 3 hours from them implying that it is nice but really not that far.  Three hours to them is 5 hours from us so we thought that would make a not too long drive then that would make Petoskey only 4 hours or so.

Since our drive isn’t too long we decide leaving at 10:00 a.m. would be ok. With the exception of RAW, Hollace and I are not really morning people so 10:00 is a perfectly acceptable time to leave.

For some reason we have it in our mind that that isn’t how most people going on vacation do it. They get up at the crack of dawn on Saturday to take off, we must feel a little guilty because we keep justifying our schedule to each other. At about 10:00 as we are getting ready to leave we see some neighbors with their popup camper take off. Apparently we aren’t the only ones with this late Sunday schedule.

We finally leave at 10:30 (a thirty minute buffer is normal for us). Every couple weeks RAW goes to Fort Wayne which is a 5 hour drive but for some reason this 5 hour drive to Yankee Springs was rough on him. He went to the chiropractor the day before  which I am sure didn’t help. We get there at 4:00 only it is now 5:00 because of the different time zone. When we tell the girl at the desk we don’t have reservations she has a knee jerk reaction and says the campgrounds are booked solid on weekends. Of course all of those weekenders should of left by now since 1:00 is check out time.

We eventually get a site on the channel. Yankee Springs looks like a nice enough campground. In order to make it worth while setting up camp, we have a policy of staying anywhere two nights.

We kind of sink into complacency where we think we should just stay here all week. I don’t know if this campground was energy sucking but we didn’t have the energy to do anything, even leave! We went into town one day, Hastings, which was a nice little town. They had a nice outdoor public sculpture exhibit going on through out town. We figured if we stayed here all week we could go into Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo and hang around the campsite. I know I didn’t feels like doing anything but read, blah.
